KILOMBERO NATURE FOREST RESERVES
“An exceptional land of higher biodiversity and endemic flora and fauna”
The Kilombero Nature Forest Reserve (KNFR) is the largest nature forest reserve in Tanzania, covering 134,511ha. The reserve lies between Udzungwa Mountains National Park and Uzungwa scarp Nature Forest Reserve in Kilombero District, Morogoro Region and Kilolo District in Iringa Region. Its highest point at Nyumbanitu peak is 2600 metres above sea level. The reserve is an immigration corridor for large mammals between Udzungwa National Park and the newly established Nyerere National Park.
Tourist attractions found in the reserve including: elephants, buffaloes, the cave at Magombera, bats caves; the Wahehe tribe sacred and worship sites, several viewpoints from which a visitor can see over 100 km away including Kilombero River, the waterfalls, ox-bow lakes with various fish species, over 150 bird species including rare Udzungwa partridge, and beautiful scenic features, valleys and landscapes.
Ecotourism Activities
The reserve cater to the interests of visitors who seek to undertake animal and bird watching, hiking or trekking, research and educational tours, forest walk, camping, cultural (visit to sacred sites, colonial historical sites), biking and photographing.
Accessibility
Access to the reserve is via Ilula and Udekwa in Iringa (about 120km). Alternatively, visitors may reach the reserve from Mikumi National Park via Kidatu – Ifakara road approximately 130km. Another option a visitor has is using TAZARA railway alighting at either Mang’ula, Ifakara or Kilombero stations.
