CHOME NATURE FOREST RESERVES

“Home to Elephant Shrew”

Chome Nature Forest Reserve (CNFR) covering a total area of 14,283 hectares is situated at Same District along the ridges and peaks of the South Pare Mountains with Shengena Peak (2,462masl) as the highest point of the mountain.

Chome has two viewpoints, Duma and Gonjanza. From Duma viewpoint, Mkomazi National Park and Ndungu/Kalemawe Lake in Tanzania can clearly be seen. Furthermore, Taita Hills and Tsavo National Park in Kenya are clearly visible. At Gonjanza viewpoint, the sisal plantations along the Arusha - Dar es Salaam highway and the towns of Makanya and Hedaru are clearly visible.

Ecotourism Activities

 Visitors can enjoy bird watching, hiking, trekking, and swimming; butterfly trailing, photographing, camping and picnicking. Other activities include: Experiencing Pare tribe cultures and traditions such as traditional music dancing and tasting local brew, conducting research and educational tours. Visitors normally trek to Shengena peak to acclimatize before climbing Mt Kilimanjaro.

Accessibility

This reserve is easily accessible by road from either Arusha/Kilimanjaro or Dar Es Salaam via Same town.  There is also a route to the reserve from Makanya on the highway to south of Same town.
