NILO NATURE FOREST RESERVES
“The land of Three Horned Chameleons”
Nilo Nature Forest Reserve covering an area of 6,025 ha is located in the East Usambara Mountains and falls under three districts of Muheza, Korogwe and Mkinga in Tanga Region. The reserve is among the 25 biodiversity ‘hotspot’ in the world and is designated as World Heritage sites. The forest has a fascinating 'Y' shape that denotes "YES" to visitors.
The reserve has Mountain peaks with pristine views at Lutindi and Nilo peaks; scenic drive route from Kizara to Kizerui with remarkable history; beautiful Tuvui waterfalls and diversity of attractive plants with superb patches of camphor trees. Worship sites are also found at Lutindi peak and Kwemkole village called "Hundu" meaning Holy water point.
Ecotourism Activities
Tanzania’s forest reserve offers pristine nature experiences such as bird watching, sunrise and sunset watching, mountain biking, night walking safari, forest walks, research and educational tours, swimming at the plunge pools of the waterfall, picnicking, camping and nature viewing.
Accessibility
The reserve is accessible by road either from Dar es Salaam, Tanga, Kilimanjaro or Arusha via Muheza or Korogwe townships. From Korogwe town it is a drive of 78 km via Magoma - Kwetonge junction. Whereas from Muheza town it is a drive of 66 km through Amani Nature Forest Reserve and Bulwa junction. There are 22km of nature trails connecting different parts of the reserve including trails up to Lutindi and Nilo Peaks. There is also 12.5km scenic drive that passes through the reserve and Kizerui Village.
